Warner Bros. anounced this morning that Katherine Waterston will play Tina (short for Porpentina) in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Waterston will be the female lead of the franchise, starring opposite Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander. Porpentina is described as “a witch who works her magic in the U.S.”

Porpentina meets magizoologist Newt Scamander when he stops in New York City on his travels to find and document magical creatures. We know from J.K. Rowling’s library book of the same name that (spoiler alert!) she eventually marries Newt and becomes Porpentina Scamander. Even though it is stated in the announcement that Porpentina operates in the U.S., Waterston is British so we are still not sure of what nationality the character will end up being.

Katherine Waterston is a relatively new face in the industry. She appeared with Joaquin Phoenix in Warner’s Inherent Vice last year, and will next be seen in the Steve Jobs biopic Jobs. Her name was first mentioned to be in consideration late last month, when a list of 10 potential actors that Warner Bros was looking into was revealed. At the time, it was mentioned she was up for the role of Queenie, not Tina, alongside supermodel Kate Upton and Elizabeth Debicki.

The studio is still looking to cast two major roles: Tina’s younger sister Queenie and Newt’s rival Jacob. More news are expected in the following weeks.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will open in theaters November 18, 2016.
