The first batch of pictures from the set of The Casual Vacancy has emerged, giving us our first look at the miniseries based off J.K. Rowling’s first novel for adults.

The fictional town of Pagford is coming to life in the southwest of England, as filming for the TV adaptation of the 2012 novel is underway. Several pictures of the actors on set were released to the press during the last few days, thus providing a first look at the BBC/HBO production. Featured in most of the photographs is Michael Gambon, who Harry Potter fans will recognize as Albus Dumbledore. This time, he is playing the character of Howard Mollison.

Other actors depicted below include Julia McKenzie (Shirley Mollison), Keely Forsyth (Terri Weedon), Abigail Lawrie (Krystal Weedon), Rory Kinnear (Barry Fairbrother) and Hetty Banes (Maureen Lowe).

It’s interesting to see Barry Fairbrother filming a seen alongside Howard Mollison. Fans of the book will recall that Barry is only featured in a short passage at the beginning of the novel, and it is his death what puts the events of the plot in motion. We don’t know yet if for the TV adaptation they have decided to postpone his death to a later time, or whether the pictures show the shooting of flashback scenes. Another possibility is, of course, that despite what it looks like the two actors were only hanging out in between takes and not actually filming a scene together.

A premiere date for the TV show has not yet been set, but it is expected to air both in the U.S. and the U.K. by the end of the year.

The Casual Vacancy was the first book that J.K. Rowling published after the Harry Potter series. The novel has sold more than 6 million copies since publication day.
