Warner Bros. Entertainment announced this morning the creation of the Harry Potter Global Franchise Development Team, a new company department that will be based in both London and Burbank, California.

According to the press release, the new team will “develop and execute a high-level strategic vision for the Harry Potter brand and its ancillary businesses, working closely with J.K. Rowling’s team at The Blair Partnership and other internal and external stakeholders and partners,” Warner Bros. said. “The creation of HPGFD reflects the continuing expansion of the Harry Potter franchise that now includes, among other projects: a new film series in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them [and] the award-winning Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter.” The press release goes on to mention Universal’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme parks in Orlando and Japan, as well as J.K. Rowling’s  Pottermore “and a future Harry Potter stage play, which will open in London’s West End next year.”

It’s an interesting move from Warner that clearly reflects the studio’s desire to keep expanding the Harry Potter brand in the future. While it’s true that there are currently enough Potter-related projects in development to justify the creation of such a team, we can’t help but speculate if any other announcements are in the horizon for the near future. Specially when July 31st is just around the corner, a date that has been historically used by J.K. Rowling to make important announcements.

Josh Berger, who was assigned as director of the HPGFT said in the statement, “With Harry Potter’s consumer touch-points continuing to grow and flourish, I am confident that this talented, cross-company global team will enable us to take full advantage of the many opportunities ahead – helping to bring Harry Potter in all its future incarnations to fans all over the world.”
